Grades & Academics

Class Rank

Your position in your graduating class by GPA.

Deep Dive & Explanation

Class rank compares your GPA to your classmates — #1 means the highest GPA in your grade. Many high schools have stopped reporting class rank because it creates unhealthy competition and penalizes students at academically strong schools.

Myth vs. Reality

Myth: "You need to be valedictorian to get into a top school." Reality: Top-20 colleges regularly admit students outside the top 5% of their class when the overall profile is compelling.

Why it matters

Some colleges (especially public flagships) still use class rank in admissions or for automatic admission thresholds (e.g., top 10% at UT Austin). If your school ranks, it matters. If it does not, colleges will use other context.
