The Application

Letters of Recommendation

Teacher and counselor endorsements that vouch for your character and ability.

Deep Dive & Explanation

Most colleges ask for 1–2 teacher recommendations (preferably from core academic subjects in junior year) and 1 counselor recommendation. Some allow optional extra letters from coaches, employers, or mentors. Choose teachers who know you well, not just those who gave you an A.

Myth vs. Reality

Myth: "Get the most important person possible to write your letter." Reality: A detailed letter from a teacher who knows you well is infinitely more valuable than a vague letter from a famous person.

Why it matters

Strong recommendation letters can distinguish you from applicants with similar stats. Ask early (spring of junior year), provide your recommenders with a resume and talking points, and send a thank-you note. A rushed or generic letter helps no one.
