STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics — a broad academic track.

Deep Dive & Explanation

STEM encompasses majors from biology to computer science to mechanical engineering. STEM fields tend to have higher starting salaries and more co-op/internship opportunities, but also more required courses and less schedule flexibility.

Why it matters

If you are considering STEM, your course choices matter early — you need calculus-based math and lab sciences by junior year of high school to be on track for competitive STEM programs. Delaying pre-calc to senior year can limit your options.
