Tests & Scores

ACT

A standardized admissions test covering English, math, reading, science, and an optional essay.

Deep Dive & Explanation

The ACT is scored 1–36 (composite of four required sections). The optional writing section does not affect your composite. It is accepted by every college that accepts the SAT. Starting in 2025, the ACT offers a shorter core version with just English, math, and reading.

Myth vs. Reality

Myth: "Elite colleges prefer the SAT." Reality: Every college that accepts standardized tests accepts both equally. Pick the one where you score higher.

Why it matters

Some students score significantly higher on the ACT than the SAT because of its different format — the ACT moves faster but tests more straightforwardly, and includes a science section (really data interpretation). Taking a practice test of each helps you decide.
