Tests & Scores

SAT

A standardized college admissions test covering reading, writing, and math.

Deep Dive & Explanation

The SAT (administered by the College Board) is a 3-hour digital exam with two sections: Reading & Writing and Math, each scored 200–800 for a total of 400–1600. The test went fully digital in 2024. Most students take it in spring of junior year or fall of senior year.

Myth vs. Reality

Myth: "The SAT measures innate intelligence." Reality: The SAT measures specific skills that improve with practice. Most students who prep seriously gain 100–200 points.

Why it matters

At test-required schools, SAT scores are typically the second most important factor after GPA. Even at test-optional schools, a strong score can strengthen your application and unlock merit scholarships.
